5 Things You Need To Know About Bridle Fit

A properly fitting bridle serves two purposes; it allows the functionality of the bridle to work with full efficiency, and it maximizes the aesthetic appearance of the horse. Here's how to ensure you have the best fit possible!

1) The crownpiece needs to sit behind the ears without pressing into them. Ideally, look for models that have cut back, or anatomical shaped crownpiece that makes room for the ears, providing a comfortable fit. It's imperative the browband is long enough that it allows the crownpiece to sit in the proper position. If the browband is too tight, it will pull the crownpiece forward onto the ears.

2)  The throatlatch should be adjusted so that when it is done up you can fit a fist between the throatlatch and the jowls of your horse. If it's done up too tight, it will impede your horse when it flexes it's poll and comes on the bit.

3) The noseband should be adjusted so that it sits just under the cheek bones without pressing into them. Often we see nosebands which are fitted too low onto the face.

When the noseband is done up you should be able to easily fit two fingers under the noseband.

4) The bit should be adjusted so that 1 to 2 wrinkles are prevalent on the sides of the lips of the mouth.

5) The flash should be snug enough that it doesn't slide off the chin of your horse, but not so snug that it prevents your horse from eating a sugar cube when it's done up.

If you follow these 5 steps your bridle will work in the way it was designed and your horse will look its best!

Happy riding!
